QUESTIONS & ADVICE
While all of our managers and supervisors openly state that they
are 100% behind VPP and safety, for some,
the way that they approach safety is superficial compared to how they deal
with production and quality. Do you have
any suggestions for how to get everyone really onboard?
This is a far more common problem than most organizations want to
realize. It's the age old issue of balancing the
competing forces behind production, quality and safety. First you must
understand and accept that as a line manager,
what got them to their position probably wasn't safety knowledge and
experience. It was most likely their knowledge
and experience with production. It's human nature to want to focus on
areas that are within our comfort zone and ones that have brought us
success, i.e., for
them production issues. Thus this sets up the cultural forces that you are
struggling with.
This is such a common issue that I have decided to dedicate this
month and the next several issues to this topic: "Organizational
Alignment". See below for the discussion.

THE MONTH - Organizational Alignment – An Ongoing
Struggle
All organizations struggle with alignment issues. Whether it is the need
to develop buy-in for a new initiative,
balancing the competing pressures between production, quality and safety
or aligning the organization around VPP,
success requires alignment around the issue.
To align an
organization requires a shared vision and buy-in. Assuming that your
organization has bought into the
issue, i.e., VPP, the next obstacle that must be overcome is one of
sharing of information. Everyone must know what is expected of them and
bottom line what they will be held accountable for. To do this requires
everyone to have quick
and easy access to the procedures, policies, tools, etc. When it comes to
safety and health or VPP the challenge is
how to get all of your information into the hands of the line management
team and front line employees.
Look to publish your materials in a control document setting that
is electronically accessible to all. Doing so eliminates
the need for managers or supervisors to maintain binders, manuals, etc up
to date. By eliminating the need for them to
maintain copies (most won’t anyway) and making the material easily
accessible you increase the chances that procedures,
policies, forms, etc. will be referenced when needed.
Leadership
from the top, appropriate measures (KPI’s), incentives, and accountability
are also needed to align an organization.

Exciting New Announcement
