QUESTIONS & ADVICE
Question: “We have been a Star site for eight
years now. As time has marched on it has become increasingly more
difficult to maintain everyone’s focus and motivation. Do you have any
suggestions?”
Your site is going through exactly what
most long term VPP site’s experience.
Ask any Star
site that has been certified for 8 to 10 years and they will tell you the
same thing. Getting certified was the easy part. The difficult part is
maintaining Star quality over the long haul. To do so requires dealing
with your very issue. After all how do you keep improving every year when
you already have a highly performing system?
The first question
to ask is: has your safety performance declined? If it has, then use your
Root Cause process to evaluate why. Next, look to the site's
expectations. Are they realistic?
Set realistic expectations
It is important that everyone understand how well you are already doing
compared to almost all other workplaces in the world. They can’t keep
expecting huge improvements each year. What they can expect is that they
will continue to have an opportunity to be involved and make a positive
contribution and that the organization is totally committed to continually
improve.
Sharing information is essential to keeping
everyone’s motivation and support.
Look for ways to
publicize what you are doing and the results that are occurring. Include
information on opportunities for involvement and who is currently
involved. There are a number of ways to do this. Use your normal
communication channels, i.e., meetings, news letters, bulletin boards,
etc. A powerful tool to also consider is using the web or your intranet
sever.
Score Cards & Dashboards are a perfect way to publish
key data and information.
Score cards and dashboards
can summarize key performance data and are the perfect way to publicize
your data. They allow the reader with a glance to obtain the critical
information that they are seeking.
When performance is public it can create positive peer pressure
in addition to developing motivation, ownership and pride.
